Tally Tables

Speaker: Aaron Cutshall, Sr. Data Architect

Summary: Because SQL Server is designed to efficiently operate with set-based queries, it does not perform as well with loops and cursors. However there are situations where you really need some type of a loop. Tally tables give you the best of both worlds by allowing you to effectively "loop" through records in a set-based manner. We'll explore what tally tables are, how they work, and more importantly review some of the many ways you can use them to turn your loops and cursors into efficient set-based operations.

About Aaron: Aaron N. Cutshall is a Sr. Data Architect with 20 years of experience in analysis, design and development for applications and databases in manufacturing and warehousing plus almost 15 years in the Healthcare Informatics field. His primary focus has been in designing and developing solutions for extremely large data sets that perform quite well in SQL Server. He is active in the SQL Server community and speaks at SQL Saturday sessions across the country.

Lightning Talk - Using Amazon Athena to Run SQL Queries against structured data on S3

Speaker: Ellis Rygg, Full Stack Developer

Summary: You have your logs sitting in Amazon’s cloud. You need to run some reports against them. Rather than importing and transforming the data, you can use Amazon Athena to run SQL directly against the data. I’ll describe how Athena works, how to use it, and show some example queries.

About Ellis: Ellis is a Full Stack Developer with an emphasis on data. In 2003, he wrote a business Software as a Service (Saas) for the Satellite TV Retailer market. He has been involved with that product in all phases since then: hardware installation; database configuration, architecture and optimization; security and compliance; cloud server administration; and Dot Net development. Since the company got acquired this year, he’s looking for a new challenge.
